Looking After Your Hair Extensions: Expert Top Tips

Washing while wearing hair extensions is a little different from what you may be used to, because extra hair on your head is going to create a thicker ?barrier? to your scalp. But just like your own hair, Hair Extensions will accumulate residue through normal wear. However, you do not need to wash the hair every day to keep consistent results. It can be tempting to wash hair daily, but don't do it! Too much hot water, exfoliation and shampoo can strip your hair extensions of the helpful oils, but if not cleansing correctly bonds can become broken down and extensions lost. If you are wearing clip-in hair pieces all day, every day, you can wash them after 3-4 wearing's. If you have bonded hair extensions, you can wash them 2-3 times weekly. Any more that this will put a lots of stress on your extensions. The longer you can go between washes the longer your hair will last. Unless if you have an oily scalp then wash more frequently, as buildup of natural oils could lead to your bonds slipping or falling out. When washing, always have your head up. NEVER wash extensions upside down as this may cause the bonds to knot and the hair to tangle. Thoroughly wet hair with warm water and after placing small amount of shampoo on your fingers, gently work the shampoo in, do not twist, scrub or rub the hair, then rinse thoroughly until all shampoo is removed. Repeat if necessary. Dab gently with towel. Do not squeeze or twist.

We recommend sulfate-free, paraben-free, colored hair care, Intense Repair Therapy Shampoo from HairAVENUE line, which deeply nourishes and instantly renews hair to its naturally healthy, most balanced state with each wash.

Tip: Use dry shampoo in between wet washing to prevent oil build up which can cause premature slippage of bonded hair extensions.

Warning: Don?t use anti-dandruff shampoos, these are extremely harsh and can cause damage to the bonds of your extensions causing them to loosen. Be vary of shampoos that contain sulfate! This substance strips hair of its natural oils and also color, therefore leaves it looking dull and dries hair out. As well sulfates can affect your bonds (especially keratin ones), causing them to slip prematurely. Also we advise to never use a volumizing shampoos as they raise the cuticles of hair and can cause tangling.

Important: It is strongly advised that you do not wash your hair at least 48 hours after having your bonded extensions attached , because the bonds needs time to ?settle in? (keratin needs time to harden) properly, to avoid shedding from the bonds in the future. Water and/or hair care product that gets inside the unset bond may cause it to loosen and fall out.

Just like your own hair, human hair extensions need be conditioned after shampooing to maintain a healthy shine and promote styling ease. To get the best results, do a light towel dry between shampoo and conditioner. Place a generous amount of conditioner in your hand. Gently work into your hair and let it penetrate hair for 1-3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. We recommend sulfate-free, paraben-free, colored hair care system, Intense Repair Therapy Conditioner, from HairAVENUE collection by Viva Femina.

It is recommended that hair extensions are treated with HairAVENUE Intense Repair Therapy Treatment at least once a week to keep them in their best possible condition, to rebuild hair?s strength, restore elasticity and hydrate dry or damaged hair. It will prevent the hair extensions from becoming brittle, leading to split and ratty ends.

Use Leave-In Conditioner to keep the moisture levels up. It is advisable to spray your extensions once a day with Leave-In Conditioner. Also if hair is excessively tangled, a nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, will be a perfect follow up for your hair extensions maintenance routine. HairAVENUE Intensive Repair Therapy Leave-In Conditioner will help you detangle hair extensions and allow you to achieve soft, smooth and manageable hair, while moisturizing it.

Please Note: To protect the bonds, applying Conditioner, Treatment or Leave-In Conditioner you must remember apply to the length of your hair extensions avoiding the root are, only to the mid-lengths and ends not directly on the scalp or too close to the bonded area. Gently towel blot to remove excess water.

Remember: Your hair is built up of keratin and treated with its own natural oils system called sebum, which is the key factor in keeping your hair moisturized. Sebum coats your natural hair assisted by brushing, but this process is disturbed by hair extensions, therefore hair extensions don?t have the benefit of your own natural scalp oils and nutrients, and so a little extra help is needed to revitalize them using the help of products. Deep Treatment, Leave-In Conditioner and Smoothening Silk Serum will help replace those necessary oils in the hair. Also most of extensions come as color treated hair, so overtime it can become dry and brittle. That?s why it is very important to use the right aftercare products: sulfate-free, colored hair care system product that will nourish, hydrate inside out and restore the hair.

The living part of hair is under the scalp where its root is housed within its follicle. It derives its nutrients from the blood. We eat food to feed our bodies with nutrients which eventually makes their way through our system to ?feed? our skin and hair. We cannot ?feed? hair extensions in the same way so we need to use alternative methods, because not receiving nutrients will affect the hair extensions. Infuse your hair with essential nutrients to bring out its inner shine and beauty with HairAVENUE Nourishing Nutrition Intense Spray that is weightless is great for day-to-day use. Provides powerful rejuvenation. Your hair extensions is hydrated and suffused with needed natural compounds for instantly softer, shinier and easier to manage hair.

After the Shampoo, Conditioner, and Leave-In Conditioner, rub a small amount of HairAVENUE Smoothening Silk Serum into your palms and apply throughout damp or wet hair. Luxurious silkening weightless oil elixir absorbs instantly to restore hair to its prime. Ultra-silky formula, leave-in oil treatment infused with silk-protein, enriched with an exceptional combination of the precious Argan and Jojoba oils. Add to ends after styling for extra luster, conditioning and frizz control. It will leave your hair and your hair extensions silky smooth and full of shine. Use as often as necessary.

Brushing and Combing Hair Extensions

Brushing is very important! Your hair extensions needs to be brushed daily. Make sure you're brushing daily, the right way, and with the help of a hair extension suitable brush, to decrease the chance of tangles and keep your extensions soft, shiny and in optimum condition. It is highly recommended that you use a specially formulated Viva Femina StyluxPROcare 100% Pure Boar/Nylon Bristles Brush, which will be perfect for that job, helping you to detangle your hair extensions without damaging hair or bonds or wide tooth comb. Other brushes may pull on your extensions and damage your hair. Always brush your hair extensions thoroughly before and after washing and also during the drying process. Start brushing at the ends of your extensions, detangling the area first and gently work your way up. Hold your hair in a low ponytail or hold hair at the bonds while brushing out the ends to prevent excessive pulling. Brush in sections to make sure your hair is brushed all the way up to attachment area. Do not comb between the scalp and the bonds. Don?t brush harshly and tug hair extensions as it can loosen and damage the bonds connection which holds them. The extensions are attached to your natural hair and therefore pulling to hard and mistreating them can result in damaging your extensions, furthermore damaging and even pulling out your own natural hair. Brush hair gently to avoid snapping the ends, which can cause the hair to shed prematurely from the bonds. Light shedding is normal.

Your hair extensions will react to heat just like your own natural hair. With real human hair extensions you have the luxury of being able to use styling tools such as blow-dryer, flat and curling irons etc. But just like your natural hair, your extensions will react to heat, so hair must be protected at all the times prior using any hot appliances. By using minimal heat (medium to low) setting, heat protector and choosing the right flat iron willminimize the damage, while increasing longevity of your hair extensions. We highly recommend StyluxPROvibe Vibrating Nano Titanium Flat Iron. Due to its unique innovative vibrating plates technology it provides even heat.
Use a heat protector (thermal spray) at all times. For the best results we recommend to use HairAVENUE Heat Activated Spray: which is thermal protectant spray, that prevents hair damage during hot styling, while leaving hair soft, styled and volumized, also hydrates, conditions and shields hair from heat damage, sealing inmoisture and locking out excess humidity for manageable, long lasting tresses frizz-free finishing with luminescent shine.
Please Note: Keep the use of curling, flat irons and other excesive use to minimum. Minimizing usage of heat appliances will increase the longevity of your human hair extensions.

Do not dry with a scrubbing motion, but instead wrap the hair with a towel to remove moisture. Always dry the base are (scalp area where extensions are attached) thoroughly. When using a blow-dryer use cool-warm setting, aim the heat/air down the hair shaft starting at the root area moving towards the ends, gently moving the hair with your fingers until at least 50% dry, then brushes can be introduced. Never use the hot settings as the heat can melt bonds over a period of time. Always use a heat protection spray before blow drying or applying a heat. For the best results we recommend to use HairAVENUE Bodyfying Blow Dry Spray which a light-weight formula enriched with powerful blend of nutrient-rich luxurious Argan and Jojoba oils, vitamins A and E, creates great styling base, reduce blow dry time, helps protect hair from thermal styling, conditions, reduces frizz and adds shine.

Just as natural curly hair, curly hair extensions tend to be dryer than other textures. To keep your hair extensions hydrated always use moisturizing conditioner and a leave-in conditioner afterwards to help your hair extensions to retain its natural shine. It will also help and make it easier to comb. Gently use wide tooth comb or your fingers to style your curly hair extensions. Curly and deep wave hair extensions can only be brushed when it is wet. Gently use wide tooth comb or your fingers to style your curly hair extensions. To prevent frizz and dryness let your curly extensions dry naturally. If you must blow-dry invest in a diffuser attachment. If use curling iron or waver, make sure to use heat protectant spray. The Body Wave hair must be blow-dried back into shape with a round hair brush. Any curly or wavy textures styles hair extensions CAN NOT be brushed when they are dry.

Please Note: The curls and waves textures in our extensions will relax over time, but using straightener, curler or waver will really speed up the process.

How to Care for the Extensions Before Sleeping

Never go to sleep with your hair wet, because it will cause the extensions to tangle with your own hair. Always ensure that your hair completely dry before going to bed.
To protect your hair extensions from tangling during the night and make it easy to brush in the morning, securing your hair extensions before you sleep is essential. Braid your hair into loose braid before going to bed. Hair nets can also be utilized when sleeping.
Also we recommend the use of a silk or satin pillow case, that aren?t just luxurious, they?re great for your hair too! It can help knock out knots and frizz from your luscious locks. Sweet dreams!

Warning to Holiday Makers and Sunbed Users

Your hair extensions may dry out abroad, due to combination of different water types and the sun. So make sure to give your hair a Treatment upon return. Discoloration is also common especially in blond shades where chlorine and sun cream may turn the hair pink/peach. Avoid salty and/or chlorinated water. Chlorine and salt water have been known to cost damage and discoloration of hair extensions. The chlorine presence in the pools and salt presence in the sea/ocean along with the heat can matt your extensions. Chlorinated pools, Jacuzzis, saunas and ocean water can cause irreparable damage to your extensions, by causing disintegration and break down of keratin bond. If you do swim, it is important that you keep your extensions out of water when swimming in a swimming pool or the sea. We recommend you take following precautions:

  • Place your extensions into a braid using a covered band;
  • Wear a hat or head scarf so that the sun does not dry out your extensions;
  • Wear a cap when swimming or keep your extensions out of the water;
  • Avoid getting the extensions hair wet where possible;
  • If you do accidently get sea water or chlorine on your hair extensions, you must wash it straight away afterwards. We recommend applying HairAVENUE Leave-In Conditioner prior to swimming. It will nourish the hair and allow to absorb the moisture as well as will prevent the hair from absorbing harmful elements, such as chlorine and minerals.
  • Exposing extensions to sunscreen may cause discoloration.

When participating in any kind of sports activities or exerting your body temperature, wear your hair up, in a ponytail, or loosely braided and use a headband to prevent your hair from tangling or knotting in the heat or the movement. For those who work out regularly or use steam room and sauna regularly should ensure that their extension bonds are dried/cooled down completely after the session at the earliest. Keeping bonds in the damp environment can make them deteriorate. If you use sun beds you should wrap your hair first in a towel. Sun beds may dry out hair and heat can weaken or even start to melt the keratin bond.

We do NOT recommend that you TINT, COLOR, PERM OR APPLY ANY EXTRA CHEMICAL TREATMENTS to the hair extensions because all our extensions unless stated as ?Virgin? it has been colored with various hair dyes and/or already chemically treated for various pattern styles purposes. If it?s a Human Virgin Hair we recommend to let professional stylist take care of it.
Your natural hair roots can be retouched, keeping in mind to stay away from the adhesive bonds. If roots needs to be done between extension services and there is enough new growth to keep the color off the bonds, we suggest doing a partial retouch along with the hairline. Keep in mind, chemicals in the hair can compromise the adhesive bonds.

Keeping the Bonded Area Tangle Free

Your hair sheds on a daily basis as part of its natural process loosing around 100-150 hair a day, so you can expect to see a small amount of hair ?trapped? in a bond. This is normal, because having extensions doesn?t stop the process, but since your hair is held together with your hair by the bond, it becomes ?trapped? and stays there. Separate the bonds on a regular basis with your fingers, because natural hair that sheds naturally on a daily basis, may tangle with the bonds causing matting and tangling. Simply use your fingers to pry away any looped strands that don't belong there, inspecting each set of bonds for knots. Skipping this step is what causes the ?birds nest? or ?dreadlock? appearance.

Attending Regular Hair Extension Maintenance Appointments

Extensions may also itch and be uncomfortable for a few days after attachment. This tends to be just above the nape of your neck, in the middle and around your crown as these are the most sensitive areas of your scalp. This will fade as your hair becomes accustomed to the extensions. Extensions need maintaining and looking after. You have to be willing to spend time on them and have patience to look after them otherwise they will not stay in good condition. Longer extensions tend to be harder to look after then shorted ones.

Visit your stylist regularly! Even the best quality extensions need upkeep which means that caring for hair extensions also involves regular trips to the salon for a professional checkups. We recommend that you book in for maintenance checks regularly throughout the duration of your bonded Viva Femina extensions, which can last up to 5 month with a proper aftercare. Be sure to schedule in your first maintenance appointment 2-4 weeks after your fitting from the day one. The main reason for maintenance appointments is to help extend the longevity of your extensions and eliminate the risk of tangling and matting. Maintenance appointments should be kept at least once a months, every two weeks for optimal results. By having your stylist regularly check your bonds, trim the ends etc., will more likely help extensions to last you much longer, and more likely to stay looking as good as new throughout the time you?re wearing them. Maintenance appointments are also great opportunity to discuss the hair extensions with your stylist, to raise any concerns you have, make any adjustments you require, and check for any obvious issues. After 4-5 month extensions MUST be removed.

IMPORTANT: NEVER ATTEMPT TO REMOVE BONDED HAIR EXTENSIONS YOURSELF! You could cause serious damage to your natural hair. Hair extensions MUST be removed by a professional stylist that is trained hair extensions specialist. How long they last varies from client to client and depends on how well they are looked after. Clients that look well after their extensions may enjoy them up to 5 months before having them removed. Leaving them in for any longer no matter how well you look after them is not advised as it puts the natural hair under strain from the root. After your hair extensions is removed, the natural hair that should came out daily, would be released and it appears as though a lot of hair is coming out at once, so don't worry, it's just all the daily build up in one go.

Just like your own hair, clip-In human hair extensions and hair pieces will accumulate residue through normal wear. However, you do not need to wash the hair every day to keep consistent results. If you are wearing the hair all day, every day, you can wash them after 3-4 wearing?s.
Always use a mild shampoo or one specially formulated for chemically treated hair.
Run the hair under warm water and after placing small amount of shampoo on your fingers, gently work the shampoo into the hair stroking downwards from the weft base to the ends. Do not twist, scrub or rub the hair. When clean, rinse thoroughly until all shampoo is removed. Dab gently with towel. Do not squeeze or twist.

Just like your own hair, human hair extensions need be conditioned after shampooing to maintain a healthy shine and promote styling ease. Place a small amount of Conditioner in your hand. Gently work into your hair and let it penetrate hair for 1-3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly in warm water. Gently towel blot to remove excess water. If hair is excessively dry, a Treatment may be necessary. If hair is excessively tangled, a Leave-In Conditioner should be used.

Brushing and Styling

While wet, gently comb the hair to remove tangles. Using a large toothed comb or specially formulated Viva Femina StyluxPROcare 100% Pure Boar/Nylon Bristles Brush, move in a downward motion away from the clips and to the ends. Always use a heat protectant when using heat tools: HairAVENUE Heat Activated Spray.
Do not sleep or swim while wearing your extension.
Lay flat or hang to air dry, set in rollers, or use a blow-dryer in a low setting, as desired.
Tip: To keep the desired wave/curl pattern, you may want to set the hair rollers that conform to the wave/curl size that you wish to maintain before storing in plastic.

Store with Care

Your clip-ins, ponytail, bangs or quick weaves has to be stored with care when unused! Before storing, ensure your hair extensions are clean and tangle-free as styling products can cause damage when left on over a longer period of time. Condition, dry and detangle them first before storing, then place in an air-tight container big enough to accommodate the hair piece size perfectly. For the best results, it is recommended to store your hair extension in its original package. However, you can store the hair in a plastic bag or box.
Exposed to sunlight extensions may lighten. To avoid it, we advise you to store them in a cool, dry place away from the direct sun.
Important: Do not sleep or swim while wearing your extension.
